Since 2011, April 17 is a very special date for wine culture lovers because it is celebrated as World Malbec Day, one of the varieties that best represents Argentina in the world.
Originally from Europe and revived in American lands, Malbec is undoubtedly Argentina’s star varietal. The recognition of this grape variety at global level is such that, during the month of April, it has its own celebration date.
World Malbec Day, commemorated on April 17 on the initiative of the Wines of Argentina organization, is a day of celebrations and gatherings around this varietal that is an Argentine emblem.
The history of malbec in Argentina
The development of this varietal in the country began in the mid-19th century, when the then President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento decided to give professionalism to the local wine industry, which at that time was very rudimentary.
With the aim of founding an agricultural school dedicated to vine production, Sarmiento proposed to the governor of Mendoza to hire Michel Aimé Pouget, a famous French agricultural engineer, to introduce high quality varietals into the country.
The project for the creation of the institution was presented to the House of Representatives of this province on April 17, 1853. After its approval, Pouget brought to Argentina different recognized grape varieties, among them Malbec.
This varietal originated in the southwest of France, however, its production in European lands did not prosper. Towards the end of the 19th century, a phylloxera plague destroyed the plantations and in 1956 a frost exterminated most of the vineyards.
In Argentina, however, Malbec grew steadily. The grape quickly adapted to the characteristics of the climate and local terroirs and consolidated its position in the domestic and foreign markets.
Its growth was such that Argentina is currently the world’s leading malbec producer.
World Malbec Day
It is an initiative created by the Wines of Argentina institution with the aim of positioning Argentine Malbec in the world and celebrating the wine expansion within the country. The date was not chosen at random: an emblematic day was chosen on which the foundations were laid for what would later become one of the most booming industries in the region.
Celebrated for the first time on April 17, 2011, World Malbec Day is supported by the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship, the Argentine Investment and International Trade Agency and the Argentine Wine Corporation.
Year after year, this day presents events and activities both within Argentina and abroad, as well as independent initiatives that join the celebrations with the sole purpose of celebrating one of the most recognized grape varieties in the world.
