How to drink wine? Tips to enjoy it to the fullest

Are you entering the wonderful world of winemaking? Take a look at these tips to drink wine and enjoy it to the fullest, getting the best out of it.

Although it may seem a simple process, drinking wine -or rather, drinking it the right way- is not so easy. Different variables affect the experience and can transform it into something memorable or make it go unnoticed.

If you are just starting to take an interest in the world of wine, or if you usually uncork a cork from time to time, you may not have taken into account some issues when tasting a good bottle.

Here are some tips to make drinking wine a moment of absolute enjoyment.

Tips for proper wine consumption

It is not only essential to choose a winery or varietal that you like, but also to consider aspects that will improve the tasting.

Drink it at the right temperature

There is no single temperature to drink wine because this factor depends on the variety we are going to drink.

When it is at the right temperature, the wine reaches all its properties and manages to transmit them to those who are drinking it.

In general terms, these are the recommended temperatures for each varietal:

  • Cavas and sparkling wines: 6 to 8 ºC.
  • Young whites: 7 to 10 ºC
  • Crianza or aged whites: 9 to 12 ºC.
  • Rosés: 10 to 12 ºC
  • Young red wines: 15 to 16 ºC
  • Crianza reds: 16 to 17 ºC
  • Reserve and grand reserve reds: 17 to 18 ºC
  • Sweet wines: 7 to 9 ºC
Open it correctly

Fortunately, there are different types of corkscrews on the market, from the classic T-shaped ones to electronic or compressed air corkscrews. Use the one that is most practical for you, but avoid going all the way through the cork to avoid breaking it. When opening, you can turn your hand or the corkscrew, but try not to move the bottle.

Before serving, wipe the mouth of the bottle with a napkin to remove any cork particles, preventing them from falling into the wine. Additionally, hold the bottle by the bottom and touch it as little as possible so as not to modify its temperature.

Air it

Another secret to drink wine and enjoy it to the fullest is to let it breathe. Although some wines do not need to be aired to provide all their nuances, it is recommended that aged wines that have been bottled for a long time undergo this process. The more tannic the wine, the more time it needs to breathe.

Serve it in the right glasses

Another important aspect when drinking wine is to serve it in the right glasses since the shape affects the taste and aroma. For sparkling wines, tulip-style glasses are recommended, while for red wine, wider glasses are suggested.

Hold the glass by the stem

Avoid holding the glass by the stem, since if you place your hand on that part of the glass, the wine will heat up and its flavor and aroma will be modified.

Prioritize pairing

If you want to maximize the experience of drinking wine, an important aspect is to value its pairing, serving it with dishes that match its flavor. This way, you will enjoy the food and the bottle much more.
